Newsgroups: alt.fan.wodehouse Date: Fri, 28 Aug 1998 23:53:35 -0600 From: Mark W. Lund To: All Wodehousers who Care about Lists Subject: Dr. Lund's complete and unofficial list of Wodehouse books (with their Genuine and Alternate Titles), Plays, and Short Stories (with their books). Once you have discovered P.G. Wodehouse you ask yourself "Why not Plum the depths?" Luckily, unlike James Joyce and Maureen O'Hara, if you want more Wodehouse, more Wodehouse is probably available, because he wrote almost 100 books. I have been collecting Wodehouse for over 20 years. After about 5 years I found it necessary to carry a list of the books that I already had so that I would avoid duplications. After about 7 years I found that this was not good enough, since many of the books had been published under different names. Therefore I found it more useful to carry a list of all the books, which has evolved into this list. Tips from Dr. Lund on collecting Wodehouse: As you will find (if you become a serious (?) Wodehouse collector) many of his books have been published by unscrupulous publishers under more than one name, meaning that you will buy a new find, take it home and discover that the plot is more familiar than usual. Part of this is legitimate because when originally published the American names didn't make sense to the British, and vice versa (for example Something Fresh was converted to Something New). This doesn 't excuse the current practice of publishing both Something Fresh and Something New in America, however. Then there are the anthologies which have been compiled from time to time, which contain a lot of duplication. Also the novel "Mike" was later split into two novels "Mike at Wrykin," and "Mike and Psmith." Following is a complete list of books taken partly from Richard Usborne's excellent Penguin Wodehouse Companion. It lists the original American titles with the dates of publication. Those on the list without dates are alternate titles that I have not yet identified and anthologies. Usborne's defect is that he doesn't list alternate titles, which I have tried to do. If you come up with any more, let's list them. Thanks to Len Lawson and Steven Hutton who supplied many of the missing alternate titles. Steven also sent me a copy of the list from the 1980 authorized Wodehouse biography. Also Daniel Danehy-Oaks, who helped with the omnibi. Ms. Hood (aka Pauline Stoker) (among others) put me straight about the evolution of the autobiographical works. And thanks to Juhani Heino who can detect defects in alphabetization even from Finland. There are a couple of books that aren't listed in Usborne that I consider to be genuine Wodehouse (your opinions may vary!). The first is partly a rip-off called "The Uncollected Wodehouse," which is mostly an anthology of short stories published elsewhere (THE MAN UPSTAIRS for gosh sakes!), but does have some magazine articles not actually found elsewhere in book form. What the editor does not actually come out and say is "Wodehouse knew all the stuff he ever wrote, was always keen to make a buck, and made sure that all his stuff was collected early and often, and since we didn't find enough truly uncollected stuff we threw in some stuff we thought you'd like as filler." The other is a book containing four Wodehouse plays: "Four Plays." Why they stopped at four plays, I don't know, but I am sure that the plays are the most uncollected Wodehouse that still exist. Since these are "all" the books, if you have one that is not on the list it is either a recollected anthology or a renamed one of those on the list. Lets see if we can list all the books with their proper names! For further additions, I suggest that we keep the titles from Usborne as the primary titles, and add the alternate titles after them. I'll keep an open mind if you come up with a book that is really missing from this list, which we can add. The anthologies and omnibuses are more difficult to catalog. I have started to create a list of short stories, annotated with their magazine and anthology appearances (help wanted!), but how do you count them as PG Wodehouse books? I think the best way is to list the anthologies that were made when PG was alive as the original. In the following: dated books are in Usborne, with alternate titles following. Dates in parentheses are Wodehouse books not listed in Usborne. Missing dates are books that haven't yet been linked with the Usborne title, or anthologies. 1922 Adventures of Sally, The (Mostly Sally) 1959 A few quick ones 1910 A gentleman of leisure (Intrusion of Jimmy) (1956) America, I like you (see Over seventy) 1974 Aunts Aren't Gentlemen (The Catnappers) (1962) Author, Author (updated version of Performing Flea) 1973 Bachelors Anonymous 1952 Barmy in Wonderland (Angel Cake) 1931 Big Money 1924 Bill the Conqueror 1935 Blandings Castle and Elsewhere (Blandings Castle) (1954) Bring on the Girls (Biographical) 1925 Carry on, Jeeves (incl. stories from My man Jeeves revised) 1922 Clicking of Cuthbert (Golf Without Tears) 1958 Cocktail time 1938 Code of the Woosters 1920 Coming of Bill, the (Their mutual child) 1967 Company for Henry (Purloined Paperweight) 1919 Damsel in Distress 1968 Do Butlers Burgle Banks? 1932 Doctor Sally 1940 Eggs, Beans, and Crumpets (1980) Eighteen Carat Kid and other Stories (1983) Four Plays 1956 French Leave 1964 Frozen Assets (Biffen's Millions) 1947 Full Moon 1965 Galahad at Blandings (Brinkmanship of Galahad Threepwood) 1910 Gentleman of leisure (The intrusion of Jimmy) 1970 Girl in Blue 1922 Girl on the Boat, The (Three Men and a Maid) (1908) Globe By The Way Book, The (comp. of newspaper clippings) 1904 Gold Bat, The 1905 Head of Kay's, The 1926 Heart of a Goof, The (Divots) 1933 Heavy Weather 1932 Hot Water 1961 Ice in the Bedroom 1931 If I were you 1921 Indiscretions of Archie *** Indomitable Jeeves (short stories) 1923 Inimitable Jeeves (Jeeves) 1954 Jeeves and the Feudal Spirit (Bertie Wooster sees it through) 1960 Jeeves in the offing (How right you are, Jeeves) 1921 Jill the reckless (The Little warrior) 1947 Joy in the morning (Jeeves in the Morning) 1936 Laughing gas 1923 Leave it to Psmith 1913 Little Nugget 1937 Lord Emsworth and others (Crime Wave at Blandings) (1932) Louder and Funnier (Essays written for Vanity Fair) 1906 Love among the Chickens 1935 Luck of the Bodkins 1914 Man Upstairs & other stories 1917 Man With 2 Left Feet 1949 Mating Season 1927 Meet Mr Mulliner 1909 Mike [split into:] (Mike and Psmith) (Mike at Wrykin) 1928 Money for Nothing 1946 Money in the Bank 1929 Mr Mulliner Speaking 1971 Much Obliged, Jeeves (Jeeves and the tie that binds) 1933 Mulliner Nights 1919 My Man Jeeves 1950 Nothing serious 1907 Not George Washington 1951 Old reliable (1957 ) Over Seventy (rework of America, I Like You for Britain) 1972 Pearls, Girls & Monty Bodkin (The Plot that Thickened) 1969 Pelican at Blandings (No Nudes is Good Nudes) 1953 Performing flea (see Author! Thanks to Mary Arthur for a list of duplicates and stories that I missed. As I have started this list I have just reading the titles entertaining, reminding me of laughs I have had over the years and encouraging me to look up the old favorites. Enjoy!
